The number one thing that came out of the community conversation was employment. We began to lobby city officials to set aside summer internships for our area. In the summer of 2014, we were able to secure 17 jobs for youth at the Barack Recreation Center. The 10 week summer internship served as the foundation for the creation of the SCC Teen Leadership Academy.

Our youth summer employment program is a huge success. It is the major benefit for our youth who participates in the SCC Teen Leadership Academy program. Being an active member of the SCC teen Leadership Academy is a prerequisite for summer employment at the Recreation Center. This is a wonderful benefit to our youth because they are able to obtain their required community service hours for graduation through the summer employment program. Having community service hours is a requirement for high school graduation.
